  • Program for Students with Orthopedic Impairments (OI)

Orthopedic Impairment (OI) means a severe skeletal, muscular, or neuromuscular impairment. The term includes impairments resulting from congenital anomalies (e.g. including but not limited to skeletal deformity or spina bifida), and impairments resulting from other causes (e.g., including but not limited to cerebral palsy or amputations).  Students are served in this program if the orthopedic impairment adversely affects the student’s performance in the educational environment as a result of issues with ambulation, hand movement, coordination, or daily living skills.

Duval County Public Schools has eleven site schools which provide medical and physical supports to students with Orthopedic Impairments by having a full-time nurse and accessible physical facilities to accommodate student’s specialized needs. While some students may require the support of a site school for medical and/or physical needs, others may attend their neighborhood school. The multidisciplinary team, which includes the parent, determines the type of services and supports the student needs. Once the student’s educational program and supports has been decided, school placement is based on the home address.
