The Duval County Public School’s Health Education and Physical Education (HEPE) Department envisions that all schools provide high-quality health and physical education programs so that students acquire the skills and knowledge to become healthy and physically literate individuals. Besides overseeing Health and Physical Education instruction, additional programs in the HEPE Department include Wellness Wednesday (Resiliency), Culture of CAREacter (Character Education), Human Trafficking Prevention Education, and the many initiatives of the CDC Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) Grant.

Members of the HEPE team provide guidance and support for students, teachers, administration, and district staff to promote and support health-enhancing behaviors for students.  This is accomplished through training, professional development opportunities, curricula, and teaching resources that align with National Health Education Standards (NHES), National Physical Education Standards, and Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.

    • Health Education provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to maintain health and wellness throughout their lifetime.  The Comprehensive Health Education program intends to motivate students to improve their health, prevent disease, and avoid or reduce health-related risk behaviors. All teaching and learning is focused on student achievement of learning standards (Next Generation Sunshine State Standards). Health-literate young people have the ability to maintain and enhance personal health and fitness, create safe environments, and manage personal and community resources. Health education provides real life learning experiences with personal applications of scientifically research-based health knowledge and skills in relevant situations. Health Education creates opportunities and experiences that engage and challenge young people to assess, explore, and question their health, while personalizing, adapting and evaluating their learning.

    • The Physical Education program in Duval County Public Schools is to provide students with the opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge, motivation, and behaviors that lead to the adoption of a physically active and healthy lifestyle. The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) defines physical education as, "the development and maintenance of skills related to strength, agility, flexibility, movement, and fair play; the development of knowledge and skills regarding sound nutrition and physical fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle; and the development of positive attitudes regarding nutrition and physical activity as a component of personal well-being."

Physical Education program outcomes include: (a) instruction in a variety of motor skills that are designed to enhance the physical, mental, and social/emotional development of every child; (b) fitness education and assessment to help children understand, improve and/or maintain their skill and fitness; (c) the development of cognitive concepts about motor skill and fitness; (d) opportunities to improve their emerging social and cooperative skills and gain a multi-cultural perspective; and (e) the promotion of regular amounts of appropriate physical activity now and throughout life.

Duval County Public Schools strives to meet the demands of 21st-century physical education and to contribute to the fight against childhood obesity in our community.
