School safety and security continues to be a priority at both the state and local level through Florida. The state of Florida has created an App called Fortify Florida. I encourage you to download it from your App store.

  • Tallahassee Visit

Posted by Lori Hershey on 11/20/2019

During November I went to Tallahassee and met with state leaders to discuss teacher pay, school safety and security as well as upcoming bills impacting education during this legislative cycle. Working with state leaders is important because state laws regarding education have a direct impact at the local level.

  • District 7 Updates

Posted by Lori Hershey on 4/29/2019

    District 7

Congratulations to the class of 2019 you’ve almost made it! I am looking forward to see you at your graduation! It’s hard to believe the school year is wrapping up and summer is upon us. Here are a few updates ….

    1. The Master Plan…every school in District 7 will receive improvement to facilities. Here are the highlights: A new K-8 between Nocotee and Atlantic Coast, Re-build Loretto Elementary preserving the original school house and canopy of majestic trees, expansion of Mandarin High School and Atlantic Coast, renovation for Crown Point Elementary and Greenland Pines Elementary. If you would like to know the specific plan for your school please email me: hersheyl@duvalschools.org
    2. The road to fund the Master Plan…The Duval County School Board will vote on a resolution which will be sent to the City Council. The City Council is the legislative body that has the authority to put a referendum on the ballot. If the Council acts to honor our request voters will decide in November on whether or not the funding source, a .5 penny sales tax will be passed in order to fund this project. No superintendent nor Board has ever presented such a comprehensive plan for the entire district since consolidation. This is truly a historic moment for both our schools and our community as we decide together what public education in Duval County will look like.
    3. You may be aware that the FL Legislators recently passed a bill that will allow teachers to serve as guardians in schools. Please know that this legislation also leaves that option up to local districts and Duval County does not have plans to arm teachers. We will continue expanding the School Safety Assistant Program and work to expand SRO’s as well.

Sheriff Williams held a community walk this spring and I had the opportunity to walk with him. It was an opportunity to listen to our neighbors share this concerns regarding safety.

  • Facilities Scenario Community Presentations Scheduled

Posted by Lori Hershey on 3/19/2019

Duval County Public Schools is constructing a Facilities Master Plan to ensure all children experience an outstanding, productive learning environment.

Following up from the Facilities Condition Index study presented earlier this year, the consultant group Cooperative Strategies will present potential scenarios for Duval’s school buildings in each separate district. We encourage you to attend the meetings that cover your specific district where you live and/or your child attends school.

After each district community presentation, the draft scenario plan will be posted on our consultant's webpage. Also on this webpage, you will find the link to the survey to provide your thoughts on the plan. Tell us what you like, and tell us what you would like to see changed.
