Can a student take American Sign Language (ASL) in place of a foreign language?

A:

Students may take ASL to fulfill the Duval County high school graduation requirement. In addition, the State of Florida recognizes ASL as a foreign language credit that fulfills the two-year requirement for college admission. However, some out-of-state colleges and universities may not accept ASL courses for foreign language credit.

Is it possible for Duval County students to take an on-line world language course?

Yes. Currently Duval Virtual School and Florida Virtual School School offer on-line world language instruction. Students may earn one credit and satisfy their virtual course requirement if they successfully complete two semesters of the same language.
