Exceptional Student Education Options

  • Families of students with disabilities attending general education inclusion classrooms can choose from the same grade level attendance and enrollment options as their non-disabled peers.  Students assigned to low incidence self-contained ESE programs and Center Schools will participate full-time at their 2020-2021 enrolled school as the in-school attendance option and Duval HomeRoom for stay-at-home.  Students in PRIDE Academies have in-school and stay-at-home options consistent with that of their non-disabled peers.

    Students with disabilities following a general education standards have Duval HomeRoom or Duval Virtual Instruction Academy as a stay-at-home option. DVIA is a full online school the district has operated for 10 years. Students can choose to enroll in DVIA as their regular, full-time school. Students who choose DVIA withdraw from their regular school and switch their enrollment over to DVIA.

    Students with disabilities on access points standards have Duval HomeRoom as a stay-at-home option.

    Related Services such as speech therapy, language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and mental health therapy will be delivered via the attendance and enrollment option chosen for academic instruction (either in-school or stay-at-home).  Reasonable accommodations may be determined on a case-by-case basis according to student’s individual needs.  

    Based upon the attendance option chosen by the family, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) team meeting may need to be scheduled upon the re-opening of schools. Teachers will monitor student progress and determine what, if any, remediation may be needed upon reopening of school campuses. IEP meetings will be scheduled at that time, as appropriate. Choices for Students in Exceptional Student Education Programs

  • Students in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Assigned to General Education Inclusion Classrooms -- All Grades

    • In-School/At Home Hybrid- Refer to grade-level scheduling for non- disabled students.
    • Stay-at-Home- Refer to grade-level options for non-disabled students.

    Exceptional Student Center Schools- All Grades (Mt. Herman, Oak Hill, Palm Avenue, and Alden Road)

    • In-School- Students will attend school five days a week with appropriate precautions.
    • Stay-at-Home - Students have the option of Duval HomeRoom. Registration for Duval HomeRoom opens on July 14-31 through FOCUS.

    Low Incidence Self-Contained Programs- All Grades: 
    PK Varying Exceptionalities (PK/VE), Communication Social Skills (CSS), Physically Impaired (PI), Participatory Level Academics (PLA), Supported Level Academics (SLA), Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH), Behavior Supports (BSC)

    • In-School- Students will attend school five days a week with appropriate precautions.
    • Stay-at-Home
      • All Grades: Students on access points standards have the option of Duval HomeRoom. Duval HomeRoom registration is open in FOCUS from July 14-31.
      • All Grades: Students on general education standards have the option of Duval HomeRoom or K-12 Duval Virtual Instruction Academy. 

    PRIDE Academy Grades PK-12

    • In-School
    • Students in PRIDE will follow the same grade level attendance pattern as their non-disabled peers.
    • For secondary school students, the in-school option is a hybrid option until Labor Day. See elementary, middle, and high school enrollment option one for details. 
    • Stay-at-Home
      • All Grades: Students on access points standards have the option of Duval HomeRoom. Duval HomeRoom registration is open in FOCUS from July 14-31.
      • All Grades: Students on general education standards have the option of Duval HomeRoom or K-12 Duval Virtual Instruction Academy. 

     

    What to Expect in School

    Many students with exceptionalities attend school in the general education environment. For these students, the only difference in their experience may be the need for special education, related services and accommodations. 

    Students who attend exceptional student center schools or attend low incidence self-contained programs will find precautions taken to minimize the spread of the virus. Mitigation steps will be made individually, considering the needs of the student and the structure of the space. Solutions may include:

    • Use of face coverings or face shields among students and staff
    • Use of personal protective equipment among staff
    • Social distancing and physical barriers of workstations
    • Hygiene procedures
