• Grading, Promotion and Assessments

    Q. How will student grades be earned while participating in Duval HomeRoom?

    A. There is no change in how grades will be earned.

    - Teachers are utilizing Duval HomeRoom and appropriate blended-learning platforms to provide instruction aligned to grade-level standards and following the curriculum guides created for the 2019-2020 school year.

    - Teachers are continuing to grade student tasks and assess student progress to assign grades.

    Q. The Florida Department of Education cancelled state assessments. How does this cancellation affect grading, promotion and final grades?

    A. The cancellation of state assessments impacts the following:

    • Promotion for 3rd grade students
    • Final grades in middle and high school
    • Graduation for current seniors
    • Requirements related to EOC courses

    Promotion for 3rd Grade Students:

    - Promotion of students in Grade 3 will be determined by teacher judgement that the student has met applicable state standards in Language Arts and Mathematics as indicated by a final grade of D or above or final grades of N or above for students at Montessori schools.

    - Should a teacher determine a student has not met appropriate levels of mastery of state standards for promotion, the teacher, principal, region superintendent or appropriate superintendent designee will evaluate available progress monitoring assessments to support the teacher recommendation. Should the student show appropriate levels of mastery through available progress monitoring tools, the student will be promoted.

    - There is no change in the procedure for parents to request retention.

Final Grades in Middle and High School:

    - All final grades will be calculated using the average of four quarter grades for 1.0 credit courses and two quarter grades for 0.5 credit courses.

    - Full credit (1.0 credit) = (Quarter 1 + Quarter 2 + Quarter 3 + Quarter 4)/4 = Final Grade

    - Half credit (0.5 credit) = (Quarter 1 + Quarter 2)/2 = Final Grade

    - 1st semester grades in which local assessments existed, including teacher final exams and district end of course exams, will not be recalculated.

    Graduation for Current Seniors:

    - With state assessments canceled, the only graduating requirements for current seniors are:

    • Pass all required credits for Program of Study AND…
    • Earn at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

-Note: Schools and districts are receiving guidance from the state. For specific questions, such as how to still qualify for a HOPE waiver if you were involved in a spring sport, please contact the guidance/senior counselor at your student's school.

    Requirements related to EOC courses

    - For students currently enrolled in courses that include a statewide EOC to be factored into the student’s grade, this requirement will be waived.

    - Non-seniors who have yet to pass the Grade 10 FSA ELA must still meet the exit criteria by passing that assessment during a future administration or earning a Concordant score.

    - Though non-senior students enrolled in the EOC course of Algebra 1 are not required to take the Algebra 1 EOC, they must still meet the mathematics assessment graduation requirement by either passing the Algebra 1 EOC (offered four times each year) during a future administration, earning a Comparative score, or passing the Geometry EOC during a future administration.

Seniors*

*Current Seniors: If a senior is expected to graduate in Spring 2020 and has not met the exit criteria for Algebra I EOC and/or Grade 10 ELA FSA, or earned a concordant score, these criteria will be waived. However, students still must earn the necessary credits and meet the GPA requirements to graduate.

  • Q. Have the promotion guidelines for students been impacted due to the school closures?

    A. No, promotion guidelines have not been impacted except for FSA assessment requirements waived for Grade 3 promotion and requirements for current seniors.

    Q. What are the grade promotion guidelines?

    A. Students may not be assigned to a grade level based solely on age or other factors that constitute social promotion (F.S.1008.25).

    Elementary

Grade level placement decisions at the elementary level are determined through a collective analysis between the parent, teacher, and school site administrator based on the following indicators:

    • Teacher judgment that the student has met applicable state standards in the appropriate core courses by a final passing grade or pre-defined grade level expectation score on a district-determined research based assessment or a sufficient growth score as determined by the difference in the district’s baseline and post-test.

    Secondary

Grade level placement decisions at the secondary level are determined by the following indicators:

    • Earn a minimum number of credits at each grade level; and
    • Earn the required GPA to grade 12 and graduation.

    Q. Can parents request their child be retained due to the current closure of school campuses?

    A. Yes, K-12 students may be considered for retention in the current grade due to school closure conditions when requested by the parent. The principal or principal designated administrator and teacher will determine grade placement based on a review of appropriate student data including classroom performance and assessments.

Placement exceptions are considered with parental input through a district review process outlined in the Student Progression Plan.
