    Stakeholder Review

    Monday, October 9 - Wednesday, October 11

    To evaluate the quality of instructional materials for use in district classrooms, Duval County Public Schools is seeking qualified expert reviewers to review the Social Studies adoption for the upcoming  2023-2024 school year.

    Have you ever wondered how the district social studies curriculum is selected? Would you like to have a hand in selecting the new social studies curriculum? Your expertise is needed.

    The district is seeking committee members with content expertise to review instructional materials and provide a recommendation for the adoption of district instructional materials for social studies courses for the 2024/2025 school year. The review will take place at the Schultz Center.

    To participate in this opportunity, individuals must commit to the following dates and times:

    • October 9th – 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • October 10th – 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • October 11th – 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

    In accordance with FL ST § 1006.283, the following criteria will be used for select reviewers to review instructional materials:

    District Adoption Reviewers:

      • An employee of Duval County Public Schools
      • At least 3 years of teaching experience
      • Hold a Florida Department of Education Certification in one or more of the following areas:
        • Elementary (K-5)
        • Middle Grades Social Science (Grades 5-9)
        • Social Science (Grades 6-12)
      • A content area specialist, instructional coach, or district administrator that directly supports instruction in the area of social studies.
      • Evidence of substantial social studies content expertise and student achievement
      • Recommendation by a district or school-based administrator
      • Parent of a student currently enrolled in a Duval County Public Schools
      • A community member who resides in Duval County.

    If you are interested in participating in the review committee, submit the application by 5:00 p.m. on September 29.  Committee members will be notified on Monday, October 2.

    The following schools will house the finalist for social studies textbook adoption. Each school will be allocated the specific grade level of books associated with its student body. Public Review will take place from Wednesday, September 6,  20023, to Tuesday, October 3, 2023

  • Process for Review

      • District reviews are made according to recommended bid lists on the .
      • Publisher forms and agreements are uploaded  for preliminary review and requests for information regarding digital and non-digital formats.
      • A committee is selected and determined at the district level to review the materials and goes through professional development for the review process.
      • The review is publically noticed at least 7 days prior to the district review.
      • A rubric is used for the review and by criterion, finalists are selected for the next level. The number of finalists is established by the review committee.
      • The review is publically noticed at least 7 days prior to the committee review.
      • Finalists’ materials are sent out by publishers to easily-accessible schools throughout the district and at 1701 Prudential Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32207 for the community to interact with. The materials are noted on the district webpage and are available for at least a 20-day period of time before the next review.
      • School, stakeholders, and community review groups are recruited and determined to establish equity and diversity among the committee.
      • Materials are put on the agenda for board consideration and materials remain available to view. 
      • The board meeting is publically noticed and finalists are posted on the webpage. 
      • The final selection or selections are presented to the board for consideration.
      • The final selection is chosen by the Superintendent.
      • A thirty-day period is open for any objection and reconsideration of the materials after final board approval.
